The Book and Gin Society, est. February 2025

A book and gin society where, somewhat to everyone's surprise, we actually talk about the books.

On the last Friday of every month we meet, usually at Southward Distillery in Lyall Bay, open with a toast, and talk about whatever we've been reading. This is where the books end up.

What this is

The Book and Gin Society has met since February 2025, under a charter we take about as seriously as you'd expect. There's no set book and no homework. Each of us brings whatever we've been reading, Soft or Hard, Fiction or not, and tells the room what it did to us.

Some of us read a hundred books a year, and some of us are mainly here for the gin. Somehow the conversation always comes back to the books.

The gin is optional, the non-alcoholic options are poured with equal ceremony, and dogs are welcome. Membership is by invitation and meetings are in person only, so you can't join us on a Friday. You can, however, see everything we've talked about.

The Shelf

Browse the shelf
  1. Each book is listed with the member who brought it. Every book here was worth talking about, even the ones someone wishes they'd never read.

  2. Every book is filed as Soft or Hard, Fiction or Non-Fiction. Most of us live somewhere between Soft and Hard Fiction, and a select few prefer Hard Non-Fiction, so you'll always know which shelf your people are on.

  3. Books brought as warnings are marked as such, and those are well worth reading about.

The Minutes

The Minutes.

After every meeting, a short note goes out listing every book we discussed. It's the next best thing to being there, and considerably cheaper.
